National Children’s Dental Health Month was started 75 years ago today, February 3, 1941! The American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors this campaign every February to raise awareness of the importance of good oral health habits beginning at a young age.

The ADA recommends children brush two times a day for 2 minutes, clean between teeth daily, limit snacking and eat healthy meals, and visit their dentist regularly.

Dr. Montano and Dr. Cardall always recommend proper oral hygiene, especially while in orthodontic treatment. Clear aligners, brackets, wires, retainers, and other appliances are major food traps so extra care should be taken to keep your teeth clean. Ask one of our team members if you are unsure how to clean around an appliance or need help flossing under a wire. Frequent snacking lowers the pH in your mouth, creating an environment for decay so try to limit snacking and sipping on beverages other than water throughout the day. Healthy meals not only make a body healthy, but contribute to strong teeth. Remember to visit your dental hygienist and dentist regularly for cleanings and checkups to make sure there is no decay forming in those ‘hard-to-reach’ areas between the teeth. Healthy, straight teeth create beautiful smiles that allow us to LIVE LIFE SMILING!

To get young children excited about good oral health, the ADA created the activity sheets pictured below. Click on the picture to download and print these activities for your little ones! Tag us in a picture with it on our Facebook or Instagram page or bring it in to your next appointment for extra points to earn prizes!
