July 4th is a fun day for America as it is celebrated nation-wide with parades, barbecues, and fireworks. Amidst all the parties, we hope you take time to remember our founding fathers who created this occasion and our troops who defend it. Below are some fun facts to share at your family gathering.
- Although the Declaration of Independence was approved on July 4^th, 1776, it wasn’t actually signed until August 9^th, 1776.
- The first Fourth of July party was held at the White House in 1801.
- In 1941, Congress declared 4th of July a federal legal holiday. It is one of the few federal holidays that have not been moved to the nearest Friday or Monday.
- The word ‘patriotism’ comes from the Latin patria, which means ‘homeland’ or ‘fatherland.
- The stars on the original American flag were arranged in a circle to ensure that all colonies were equal.
- The words “under God” were not added to the Pledge of Allegiance until the year 1954.
- Someone who specializes in the history of flags is called a vexillologist.
- The American flag patch is backwards on U.S. Army uniforms. The reason? The blue field on the flag (the part with the stars) faces forward to symbolize carrying the American flag into battle.
- The major objection to being ruled by Britain was taxation without representation, which meant that people didn’t want to be taxed by a government that did not represent them.
- Betsy Ross, according to legend, sewed the first American flag in May or June 1776, as commissioned by the Congressional Committee.
- Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national animal but was out-voted when John Adams and Thomas Jefferson chose the bald eagle.
- To give some perspective: according to the U.S. Census, just an estimated 2.5 million people lived in the United States in 1776; the nation’s estimated population on this July Fourth is 316.2 million.
- Francis Scott Key is a poet responsible for writing America’s national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner.”
- The Continental Congress adopted the first American flag as a symbol of the country to encourage patriotism on June 14, 1777.
- The Liberty Bell cracked when it was rung for the first time on July 8, 1776 to celebrate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence
- The names of the first signers of the Declaration of Independence were not made public until after the colonies won their independence from Britain for fear if the names were revealed and the colonies lost, the signers would be prosecuted for treason; a crime punishable by death.
- The national anthem is actually set to the tune of an old English drinking song called To Anacreon in Heaven.
- While there is not a hidden map on the back of the back of the Declaration of Independence, there is a visible message that reads “”Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th July 1776.”
