  • Radiation Exposure of CBCT Scans: Get the Facts Straight

    By admin August 3rd

For all you Consumer Reports fans out there, you may have seen an article published in March of this year warning of the dangers of medical radiation exposure. It proposes risks associated with diagnostic radiation and generally accuses medical professionals of not practicing them properly or safely. Although the article focuses primarily on medical radiography, radiation associated with dental x-rays is also discussed.

Dr. Montano and Dr. Cardall are committed to the safest practices and procedures in all aspects of treatment to their patients. Our team follows the (AAO) American Association of Orthodontists’ recommendation to follow the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle. We don’t expose our patients to more radiation than our doctors deem necessary for a successful outcome.

Montano & Cardall CBCTOur new office is equipped with the latest advancements in technology, including Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) which allows imaging of the teeth, jaws, and surrounding structures in 3D. This capability enables our doctors to create more accurate and efficient treatment plans, resulting in better and faster results. This machine not only provides our doctors the capability to rotate the whole image onscreen and see every detailed angle, but the image is produced using approximately the same amount of radiation as the more common 2D panoramic images.

The president of the AAO sent a letter to the editor-in-chief of Consumer Reports addressing the orthodontic concerns mentioned in their article. To read the full letter with a link to the article, click HERE.
