  • Teen Braces: How To Persuade Mom & Dad To Let You Get Braces

    By admin April 10th

Braces (and teen braces) are pretty common these days. You probably have several friends who have braces now or had them when they were younger. You should also know that orthodontic treatment isn’t the torture you may have once thought. It’ really no big deal!

If you’ve been thinking about getting braces for your health, appearance, or self-esteem, you know that a good first step is to convince Mom & Dad. You could try asking and begging, but in our experience, it’s much easier to convince them with facts and a well-reasoned argument. With these reasons in your back pocket, you’ll be much more likely to be successful in persuading your parents to let you get braces.

Getting an Early Start is Important

Pursuing orthodontic treatment (such as braces or Invisalign) can sometimes be more effective and less costly if done at a young age. By seeing an orthodontist when you are young, you usually have more treatment options available to you because your jaws and teeth are still growing. You can tell Mom & Dad that by getting braces as a teenager, your orthodontist can use braces or Invisalign to guide the development of your face and mouth so that when you’re finished with treatment, you’ve got a natural smile that you’re proud to show off to everyone. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all kids should have their first visit with an orthodontist by age seven, however, if you haven’t already seen an orthodontist, don’t worry- it’s never too late. Drs. Montano and Cardall are your best option for getting the best smile possible at any age.

    It’s Not All About Looks!

Some people think that straightening teeth is only cosmetic to improve the look of the teeth but doesn’t affect your overall health. Not true! Orthodontic treatment can have a huge impact on several areas of your overall health as well as your general dental health. When your teeth are very crooked or your bite is misaligned, you have a much higher risk of gum disease and periodontitis (a more serious gum infection involving the supporting structures of the teeth). Braces help to reduce your risk by giving bacteria and food fewer places to hide and making it easier for you to clean those areas when you’re brushing and flossing.

Orthodontic treatment can also greatly reduce the risk for uneven wear of the teeth, which can shorten teeth and necessitate costly crowns later in life. In addition, uneven wear increases the potential for cracked teeth and risk for TMJ or TMD (temporomandibular joint dysfunction), which is often related to a poorly fitting bite. In short, orthodontics is a great investment to prevent a lot of costly future dental work!

Besides oral health benefits, braces for teens can also help alleviate breathing and other airway problems, correct chewing issues that can impact digestion, help alleviate jaw and muscle issues, neck pain, and more!

    Orthodontics Can Help With Self-Confidence
Having a smile that you’re embarrassed about or are afraid to show can have a long-lasting impact on your self-esteem. Many of our teen patients tell us that before treatment, they would either smile less or take steps to hide their teeth when they did, but after treatment with braces or Invisalign, they were more outgoing and had better self-confidence when it came to their appearance. We are often told by our patients that they even find themselves smiling more often!
